Several speakers on Tuesday praised the Mylapore Academy for rendering yeomen service to the social and cultural life of the city.
Participating in the 59th anniversary celebrations of the Academy, former Policy Advisor UN (FAO) B.S. Raghavan said the academy has been rendering pioneering service in various fields by involving the younger generation in public service of high order.
Former Chief Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthi appreciated the Academy members for honouring people from various walks of life and appealed to the public to join institutions that were interested in solving the common man’s problems.
Tamil Nadu and Chennai had the dubious distinction of topping the list in the number of road accidents in the country. In 2014, the Mylapore Academy has to take up road safety campaigns on a sustained basis, said former member of Central Administrative Tribunal R. Santhanam.
Southern Railway Chief Personal Officer N. Swaminathan urged the Academy to involve residents in finding area-wise solutions to congestion.
As part of the celebrations, Dr. C.V. Ramaswami (93) and Dr. M.V. Vasantha (81) were honoured for their dedicated service to Dhanvathiri Vaidyasala, a charitable dispensary run by the Academy. Awards and cash prizes were given to meritorious institutions and individuals. These included Best Social Worker award instituted in the memory of Sarojini Varadappan. KCSN Higher Secondary School, Washermenpet bagged The Hindu ’s silver rolling trophy.
