The Egmore Museum is being spruced up to make it accessible to differently abled persons.
As part of the Accessible India programme, the museum is working towards enabling physically challenged persons access all floors of the museum.
A sum of ₹2 crore was sanctioned by the Centre for the project and work began in January, officials said.
“To enable physically challenged persons access the museum, we have installed a staircase lift. Ramps are also being set up. Lifts are being installed so that wheelchair-bound persons can move between floors easily,” officials at the Museum told The Hindu. They said tactile flooring was being installed on all the floors to help visually challenged persons. “The idea is to make this place a barrier-free environment for physically challenged persons. Toilets are also being made disabled-friendly. We are yet to decide on the number of toilets that will come up, but there will be enough,” they added.
The department is working on providing a separate parking space for differently abled persons, they said. “But, this is a heritage building. So we cannot make all modifications easily. They have to be done carefully,” they added.
