The Pallavaram municipality has submitted to the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT), Southern Bench, that it will put a stop to garbage dumping in Ganapathypuram around the Pallavaram periya eri after March 31.

A recent report submitted by the Pallavaram municipal commissioner to the tribunal stated that work on a scientific landfill at Venkatamangalam had been completed, and the waste-to-energy plant too was nearing completion. The machinery for the plant, imported from Germany, had reached the site and would be installed within a month, the report said.

Civic groups have been asking the local body to revive the Pallavaram lake as its margins have become a dumping ground. In September 2012, S.P. Surendranath Karthik had filed a petition before the NGT, seeking an order restraining the Pallavaram municipality from dumping garbage there.

“We want to make it more environment-friendly. All residents will extend their support to the initiative,” said G.S. Natarajan, advisor, Radha Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.

Residents said that work on garbage transfer stations at Kannadapalayam in Tambaram, and Ganapathypuram in Pallavaram municipality was far behind schedule.

The tribunal directed municipal officials to spell out the exact date for completion of the waste-to-energy project at Venkatamanagalam during the next hearing on February 11.
