After almost four years after its inauguration, Mundakakanni Amman Koil MRTS station gets a parking contractor. In February 2018, the station opened its parking lot, which can accommodate 35 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers.
According to S. Rajendran, parking contractor at the station, two additional parking facilities have been allocated. One of them is functional; the other one is under renovation. All the three facilities will have four CCTV cameras each. The monthly parking pass for four-wheelers is ₹2,500; and ₹300 for two-wheelers.
No takers
Rajendran, however, points out that the facilities are underused as residents and commuters park their vehicles on the road.
Mundagakanniamman Koil station in Kalvi Varu Street is smack in the middle of a residential area with access to companies and educational institutions.
As many apartment complexes in areas neighbouring Kalvi Varu Street lack proper parking space, residents, and, at times visitors too, leave their vehicles on the street. When Mundakakanni Amman Koil MRTS opened, the station premises turned into another parking facility. The premises teem with taxis and unused vehicles too.
Though a parking space was earmarked at the station premises, it was inaccessible as no company came forward to take up the contract.
“Vehicles continue to be parked illegally on the road. Everybody wants to park their vehicles illegally. In the first parking facility, the contractor has received 25 and 50 registrations from the four-wheeler and two-wheeler users respectively. At the second facility, which is open-air, 65 cars and 50 bikes can be accommodated. But, only seven cars have been using the space,” he says.
Rajendran, who is also the contractor at Chepauk MRTS, adds, “If there is no demand for the existing parking space, it is futile to open the third facility and install CCTV cameras.”
