T.Nagar will get a fully automated multi-storey parking lot as part of the measures to decongest the commercial hub of the city. The Chennai Corporation council adopted a resolution on Wednesday approving the setting up of the facility.

The parking lot would come up on Bashyam Road, near Panagal Park. It would have a capacity to accommodate 200 four-wheelers. The Corporation has asked Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd. to appoint a consultant for preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed facility.

The State government has provided the required administrative sanction for the facility, which would be constructed on a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer basis. The proposal follows the suggestion made in a study prepared as part of the T. Nagar Redevelopment plan.

This is not the first proposal on setting up a multi-storeyed parking lot in T. Nagar. A couple of years ago, the Chennai Corporation had plans to establish an underground parking lot on its playground in Venkatnarayana Road. The proposal was to retain the playground with only the entry and exit of the proposed facility coming up on it. Following protests from residents and on the directions of the Supreme Court, the Corporation had to give up the idea.

The council also approved a proposal to construct a G + 2 floor two-wheeler parking lot on NSC Bose Road, a key commercial area in north Chennai, at an estimated cost of Rs.4 crore. The State government has accorded administrative sanction for this project too. A consultant would soon be appointed for preparing the DPR, the resolution adopted by the Council said.

The Corporation Council also adopted resolutions approving the contracts issued for re-laying bus route roads and interior roads at a cost of around Rs.13 crore. The pricing is based on a comparison between the official estimates and prevailing market prices. The official estimates are drawn on the basis of the Schedule of Rates provided by the Public Works Department. However, as the market rates were much higher, the civic body arrived at the new rates by comparing the two.

A resolution on upgrading 30 bus route roads was also adopted. The TNUIFSL would soon call for consultants for preparing DPR for these corridors.
