The multi-level parking lot under construction on Greams Lane in the Thousand Lights area will be ready by September next year, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the Rs.30-crore facility being constructed by a consortium formed by Apollo Hospitals and MARG group, he said that this would be Chennai's first fully automated car park facility. “Korean technology is being used and it will take only two minutes each to park and retrieve a car,” he said.
A total of 200 cars and 240 two-wheelers can be parked in the facility, which is being implemented on the Design, Build, Operate and Transfer mode. The Chennai Corporation, which is the concessionaire, would get Rs.46 lakh every year for 20 years with an additional five per cent added annually. In the stilt plus seven floor structure, four floors would be used for commercial purposes.
The charges are Rs.5 per hour for two wheelers and Rs.5 for every additional hour. And for cars it would be Rs.20 for the first hour and Rs.10 for every additional hour. “Since most of the vehicles using the facility would be of those coming to the hospital, the Chennai Corporation has fixed very nominal charges. It is very economical when you compare it with charges at several shopping malls in the city,” Mr. Subramanian added.
Corporation officials, including Superintending Engineer (BRR) M.Ramamurthy and Zonal Officer M.Sampath, were present during the inspection.
