MTC suspends two drivers for Tondiarpet collision

November 18, 2012 12:41 pm | Updated 12:42 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation Limited (MTC) has suspended the two drivers who were involved in the bus accident on Tondiarpet High Road on Thursday morning.

MTC officials said that both were responsible for the accident. “After further investigation, the suspension of the driver, whose responsibility is deemed to have been lesser, will be revoked,” said the official.

On Thursday morning, the two buses, travelling on routes 159 E and 44 C, collided with each other near Pandian Theatre bus stop on Tondiarpet High Road. Over ten persons, including the bus drivers, were injured.

M. Palani (44) was driving the 44C towards IOC from Koyambedu bus terminus and Lawrence Pradeep More (32) was steering the 159E towards Koyambedu. The 44C was leaving when the collided occured.

The commuters of the 159 E alleged the driver, Lawrence, was speeding. Senior MTC officials said that Lawrence alleged that he had swerved to the right to avoid ramming a share-autorickshaw that passed by in front of the bus.

A case was registered by the police under section 337 of the IPC (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act (driving at excessive speed).
