MTC bus mows down boy

April 13, 2013 02:30 am | Updated 01:26 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A two-and-half-year-old boy was killed in Park Town when he came under the wheels of an MTC bus on Friday.

A few commuters including the boy’s parents were injured and two autorickshaws were also damaged in the accident.

According to the police, the victim M. Bharath, his parents Magilal and Vimala, and his elder brother Nithesh, were waiting at Ratan Bazaar for a bus to go to Madipakkam.

Around 7.30 p.m., bus 42B headed towards Broadway tried to overtake two other MTC buses stationed near the bus stop on Ratan Bazaar Road. Unaware of the commuters waiting near the stationed vehicles, Ramanaya tried to park there but ended up mowing down the boy and two autorickshaws. “It’s a clear case of negligence on the part of the bus driver,” the police said.

Traffic came to a halt in Ratan Bazaar, one of the busiest and oldest marketplaces in Park Town, after hundreds of residents and onlookers blocked the road for over an hour protesting the bus driver’s rash driving.

The agitated public also broke the glass panels of the bus. Later, a police team led by S. Ramesh Babu, inspector in-charge, Flower Bazaar, pacified the agitators and arrested bus driver S. Ramanaya (40).

A case of rash and negligent driving has been filed by the Flower Bazaar police.
