Moulivakkam building to be demolished by September 16

The Madras High Court on Friday granted time till September 16 for the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to demolish the remaining structure in the Moulivakkam building collapse site.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan passed the direction based on the submission made by the CMDA that the structure will be demolished in 20 days by adopting controlled implosive technology.

When the plea moved by DMK leader M.K. Stalin seeking direction to demolish the existing structure, provide compensation to the affected persons and to transfer the investigation to CBI came up for hearing, counsel for CMDA said, “In view of the Supreme Court direction, the demolition work has been allotted to a private contractor at a cost of Rs 49.95 lakh for which an agreement has been executed on June 16.”
