There has been an increase in the number of transgenders voting in the Assembly elections on Monday.

While the final number of the third gender who cast their vote was not immediately available, activists said the awareness campaigns were a step in the positive direction.

“Most members in our community were very keen on castin g their votes this assembly elections. We have voter ID cards and the polling booth officials were very courteous,” said Jaya, general manager, Sahodaran, an organisation that works for LGBT rights in Chennai.

Selviamma (40) said that over the years, more and more people from the community have been coming out to vote.

“Our pleas are now being heard slowly. And many have realised that voting is the only way to achieve greater good,” said Selviamma, while she ensured her friends have voted.
