Reading books not only enriches one’s knowledge, but also conditions one’s emotions, said R. Thandavan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras. He was bringing down the curtains on the Chennai Book Fair on Wednesday evening.
Referring to the huge crowds seen on the last day of the 13-day book fair at YMCA Ground in Nandanam, Mr. Thandavan pointed out the event had become an indispensable part of the city’s calendar since it began in 1977.
M. Meenakshi Soma Sundaram, president, Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), said the response to the book fair had been growing over the years, with the total number of visitors to the 38th edition this year being more than 10 lakh.
At the valedictory function, awards were distributed to short films, short stories and 33 persons from the publishing industry.
Three short films, Ayah , Deiva and Monologue , were selected for the awards.
The book fair was held between January 9 and 21.
