After two sweltering days, several parts of the city received welcome showers on Sunday evening.
According to the meteorological department, Nungambakkam recorded 4 mm of rainfall, Meenambakkam 1.4 mm, Kattupakkam 2 mm and Madhavaram 7 mm until 8.30 p.m. on Sunday.
The short spell of rain occurred due to convective activity in areas including Perambur, Villivakkam, Adyar and Kolathur. K. Vijayalakshmi, a resident of Perambur, said that even though the showers were light, they were welcome as they cooled the city.
Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said that the city is likely to receive rains over the next two days, after which there would be a lull until the first week of August.
“Chennai and neighbouring districts have received considerable amounts of rainfall this month,” he said.
The maximum temperature in the city on Sunday was 37.7 degree Celsius, which 3.2 degree Celsius above the usual temperature for this month.
Meenambakkam station recorded a maximum of 36.8 degree Celsius, which is an increase of 2.1 degree Celsius.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Nungambakkam was 36.1 degree Celsius and in Meenambakkam, it was 36 degree Celsius.
For Monday, the forecast is partly cloudy skies that could bring rain or thundershowers in the evening or night and the maximum temperature is likely to be around 37 degree Celsius.
