In a move aimed at augmenting its revenue and protecting its properties, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department plans to convert more vacant plots of land belonging to it into parking lots.

A senior official of the HR&CE department said several vacant spaces had already been converted into parking lots, leading to substantial revenue. The department’s plan to convert other plots that were unutilised would also help protect them from encroachments, he pointed out.

The charges would be Rs. 800 (monthly) for cars and mini-vans and Rs. 1,000 for buses and heavy vehicles, he added.

The vacant plots of land which are proposed to be made parking spaces are located on GH Road (1.70 acre) in Vyasarpadi; Sarathy Nagar (0.82 acre) and Dhandeeswaram Nagar (1.55 acre) in Velachery; Villivakkam (around one acre) and Royapettah (4,500 square feet).

The vacant land at Sarathy Nagar, Velachery, belonging to Yoga Narasimhar Temple, is located near the Vijaya Nagar bus terminus on Velachery Main Road.

A senior official said the department has proposed to construct a compound wall around the vacant land on Dhandeeswaram Nagar 3rd Street, which is at present used as a playground by residents of the locality.

Already the department runs parking spaces at Vadapalani, Velachery, Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram, Mylapore, Kolathur and Triplicane.
