Two of them planned in T.Nagar
The Chennai Corporation will construct foot overbridges with lifts at three locations and provide lifts in two existing FOBs.
According to the budget proposals of the civic body for 2011-12, the new facilities will come up near the Semmozhi Poonga on Cathedral Road, close to Ranganathan Street on Usman Road, and near the T.Nagar bus terminus. Lifts would be established in the FOBs on Peters Road and Haddows Road.
Mayor M. Subramanian told presspersons that lifts have been provided for the FOB on Nungambakkam High Road and work to install lifts at six more FOBs would begin next week.
Welcoming the budget proposal, residents of Motilal Street said the FOBs would be beneficial as pedestrians vie for space with motorists and hawkers in T.Nagar. The civic body, they added, must ensure that the facilities were not encroached on by hawkers.
T. R. Shankaran, a resident of Thanikachalam Road, said the location of the FOBs should be decided in consultation with those residing in the area. There would not be enough space for an FOB near Ranganathan Street, he added.
The other budget proposals include construction of a bridge across the Kodungaiyur canal linking Muthamizh Nagar and Kaveri Nagar for the benefit of residents of Tondiarpet. In a bid to decongest traffic on Muthuswamy Salai and E.V.R.Salai junction, the road would be widened.
The Corporation also proposes to beautify nine flyovers, including those on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai and Sardar Patel Road. The beautification work would include provision of nameboards, decorative lights and creating parks with fountains beneath the flyovers.
The civic body plans to concretise 248 interior roads, provide additional parking meters on important roads and install display boards on gantry girders. The work to provide such display boards would be completed in two months. More sculptures portraying art and culture of the State would be placed in 10 traffic junctions.
