More Amma canteens soon in Chennai

January 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 11:51 am IST - CHENNAI:

Nearly 50 low-cost Amma Unavagams are all set to come up very soon with the Chennai Corporation officials saying that the total number of canteens functioning in the city will be over 400.

“Each ward in the city has at least one such canteen. We hope to add one more to each ward, especially in zones 4,5 and 6,” a senior Corporation official said. Finding space has been a challenge, with the civic body already struggling to obtain land for its various other schemes .

“We have been delayed in seeing the project through, as land is becoming harder to come by. About 70 canteens are under various stages of construction and will be opened later,” the official said, adding that proposals to obtain space for 30 more canteens were ready. “While most of the canteens will be constructed in Corporation-owned land, we are also trying to negotiate with other government departments for space,” the official said.
