After days of sultry weather post Nilam, the city will soon witness a revival of the northeast monsoon.

To begin with, there will be light rains on Tuesday, the meteorological department said.

Though there is no formation of depression or low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, the northeast monsoon will revive soon, an official said. Over the past few days, rise in maximum temperature and sultry mornings often resulted in light rains, he said.

After cyclone Nilam last week, Chennai experienced warm weather. On Saturday, however, the city and its suburbs received overnight showers of 2 cm.

On Monday, the day temperature in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam was 33 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, about 4 degrees more than the average temperature.

Since October, the city has received 47 cm of rainfall, an increase of 10 cm over the average rainfall for the period. Meenambakkam too recorded around 2 cm more than the usual rainfall at 38 cm.

The city records the highest amount of rainfall in a month, nearly 40 cm, over 12 days in November. There will be light showers in some areas soon, the official said. The maximum temperature may be 33 degrees Celsius.
