In a series of chain snatchings and attention-diversion crimes targeting woman on Monday, perpetrators fled with over 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

According to police, in Chetpet on Monday afternoon, Subhadra (70), a resident of Harrington Road was walking near her house when two men diverted her attention by telling her thieves were on the prowl and that they would help her keep her gold jewellery in a packet. The septuagenarian returned home to find her six-sovereign gold chain missing.

In a similar incident the same afternoon, homemaker Sundari (59) of T. Nagar was targeted by two men, who tricked her and stole her six-sovereign gold chain. In yet another incident on Monday evening, two men conned Sumathi (54), a resident of Nungambakkam, and fled with her chain and bangles weighing eight sovereigns.

In addition, there were several incidents of chain snatching reported from various parts of the city, where motorcycle-borne men stole gold chains weighing a total of 30 sovereigns in all.

Police have launched an investigation into the incidents.
