Tension prevailed at Thirubhuvanai near here on Sunday after supporters of a murder victim went on the rampage inside a private company. The angry mob ransacked the company and set fire to a container lorry with goods besides damaging a number of cars and lorries in the premises.

The incident is said to be a fallout of the murder of Velalagan, an AINRC functionary and labour contractor on April 19 last year.

Velalagan was driving from Thirubhuvanai to Kothapurinatham when a gang intercepted his car at Thiruvandarkovil on April 19 last year and threw a country bomb into his vehicle, hacked him to death and fled.

The police arrested seven persons including V. Udhaya Kumar, an AINRC functionary and president of the Employees Union of the private company. Udhaya Kumar had come out on bail two months ago.

On Sunday, Udhaya Kumar attended the consecration of a local temple and went to the private company. Tension mounted after supporters of the murder victim barged into the premises and ransacked the furniture and cars parked on the premises. The agitators also set fire to a container lorry loaded with materials.

On information, police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild caning against the agitators who staged a road blockade on the Thiruvandarkovil Main Road raising slogans against Udhaya Kumar.

Later, one group went to Sanyasikuppam and ransacked Udhaya Kumar’s house. A huge posse of police personnel led by Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Apoorva Gupta and Superintendent of Police A. Gunasegaran are camping at Thirubhuvanai.
