A 16-year-old girl who was lost on the streets of Tambaram was rescued by Childline on Friday. The girl was found roaming outside the railway station helplessly, when a volunteer spotted her.

On inquiry, they found that she was a native of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and had come to the city for sightseeing a week ago. But her 20-year-old boyfriend left her alone and went back to the Andamans. She also revealed that she was offered a place to stay in a man’s house in Ambattur but she left his home, due to reasons she refused to reveal. Later in the day, the girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee Kancheepuram district, which sent her to a nearby children’s home.

‘Missing for months’

Officials from the CWC said that during interrogation, the girl said that she had a nine-month-old baby in her native place who was with her mother. When they contacted her mother, she said that the girl had gone missing many months ago and that they had lodged a complaint with the local police there.

“But she said she came here for sightseeing and her family knew about it. Also she has regularly visited Chennai and other States for work. We still don’t have clarity about her case,” said a member from the Committee.

“We suspect she might be a victim of trafficking and have sought help from the police,” the official said.

Officials from the Committee have written to the local police to probe her case to find out the real reason behind her presence in Chennai.
