Residents of Choolaipallam, MGR Nagar, staged a demonstration near Metrowater office in K.K. Nagar on Thursday demanding piped water supply.

About 100 residents gheraoed the Metrowater office demanding water supply through the connections given nearly two years ago.

S. Rajeswari, a resident, said, “We have been living in this locality for three decades now. Metrowater gave us water connections for Rs. 100 under a scheme for the underprivileged. But, we have had to rely on street water supply for our daily needs and pay 50 paise or Re. 1 for each pot. I spend at least Rs. 15 on water every day.”

As groundwater quality was poor, residents said they depended entirely on Metrowater. They said they didn’t have a choice but to bring the issue to the attention of the authorities concerned.

G. Selva, Virugambakkam CPI (M) secretary, said water must be provided through public taps. The residents dispersed after officials assured them of piped water supply. Later in the day, the locality was provided with piped water.
