In the aftermath of the death of Doss, a labourer engaged by one of its contractors, inside a manhole in Mogappair East, Chennai Metrowater has suspended the assistant engineer in charge of the location and transferred the area engineer.

Doss was asphyxiated inside the sewage line on Maraimalai Adigal Salai, Mogappair East. The incident occurred in spite of the strict safety norms and procedures included in the contract agreement conditions to be implemented by contractors while carrying out sewage-related work, a Metrowater release said.

The Board has suspended all non-emergency sewage related work by contractors for a week. A meeting of all contractors engaged in sewer-related works was held at its headquarters to impress upon them the need for safety and penal provisions available in the agreement.

Work will resume after supervising engineers are satisfied about the adequate availability of safety gear for workers, the release said.
