The much-awaited inauguration of the next stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail from Little Mount to Chennai Airport has been delayed, yet again.
It was expected that the stretch would be open to the public in mid-August or the last week of the month, which appears to be unlikely, sources said.
“We have no idea why it has been delayed and when the launch is likely to happen,” an official said.
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected the stretch and stations in the last week of July and gave his approval within a few days.
But officials said there were a few corrections suggested by the CMRS that had to be carried out.
“The corrective work on this stretch is not major and has been on for a few weeks now. But we are not sure if this is the only reason for the delay,” another official said.
Some sources said that the inauguration of the Metro Rail stretch may be combined with that of St. Thomas Mount Metro railway station.
“According to the schedule, the St. Thomas Mount station will be inaugurated only in October, but it may be advanced to September. The inauguration of both may be done together,” an official said.
