May 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

A young woman suffering from mental illness was reportedly raped at her residence in New Washermanpet on Tuesday evening by her 25-year-old neighbour.

The victim is undergoing treatment at a hospital, while the suspect is at large.

New Washermanpet police said the incident took place around 5 p.m. when the woman was alone at home after her aunt had gone out. The suspect — Pradeep, a native of Ariyalur, who works in a shop in the area — had entered the victim’s house and knew she was alone. He assaulted her sexually and fled the scene.

The victim told her aunt of the incident when the latter returned. She then took the victim to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital for treatment and later lodged a complaint at New Washermanpet police. A case of rape was registered against Pradeep.
