The memorial for veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan, which will also house his statue, is getting the finishing touches. The Public Works Department is constructing the memorial on Durgabai Deshmukh Road in Adyar at a cost of ₹2.8 crore.

Sources in the PWD said painting work is on at the memorial, which is spread over 28,300 sq. ft. The building has been constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture and is adorned with domes. Besides setting up a reverse osmosis plant for drinking water needs and a toilet complex, the PWD has also provided seating arrangements for visitors.

There are plans to have a display of pictures of the veteran actor in the memorial. Visitors would also be entertained with short videos or films of the iconic actor. The statue on Kamarajar Salai may soon be shifted to the memorial in Adyar. “We are awaiting a government order through the Information and Public Relations Department to shift the statue,” said an official.

It may be recalled that the State government had informed the Madras High Court early this year that the statue on Kamarajar Salai would be removed following a PIL that sought its removal from the arterial road. “We plan to complete the entire project in a week,” the official added.
