The vehicular bridge across the Cooum in Mehta Nagar, near Aminjikarai, will be completed by the end of this year, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing the work on the facility, coming up at a cost of Rs.3.67 crore, he said officials had been told to speed up the construction.

The work on the bridge, which will link Mehta Nagar Officer's Colony First Street and Venkatachalapathy Street, began in February.

The bridge will be 149.59 m long and 8.5 m wide and have pedestrian footpaths.

The Chennai Corporation had sought more funds from Union Minister for Textiles and Central Chennai Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran, from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund. Mr. Maran had provided Rs.1.50 crore so far, the Mayor added.
