A final year MBBS student of a deemed medical university in the city fought an unsuccessful legal battle before the Madras High Court against the cancellation of one of his examinations after he was found in possession of a smart watch in the hall while attending a paper on obstetrics and gynaecology on February 23.
After a Division Bench of Justices Rajiv Shakdher and Abdul Quddhose ordered production of the watch in the court to ascertain if the contents stored in it could be accessed even without it being connected to a Wi-Fi router or a smart phone, the student, present in the court, chose to withdraw an appeal preferred against a single judge’s order.
Initially, Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana had dismissed the student’s writ petition, disbelieving his contention that the watch could not be used for anything, except checking time, unless it was connected to the Internet.
Taking her judgment on appeal, the student once again claimed that the data stored in the watch could not be accessed without an Internet connection.

The HC Bench, led by Mr. Justice Shakdher, directed the university to produce the watch in court and found that answers for some questions had been stored in it as observed by the invigilator.
