The Makkal DMDK (MDMDK), a breakaway group of the Vijayakant-led DMDK, which emerged ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections, on Monday decided unanimously to approach the DMK for a merger.
Former MLA and party president V.C. Chandhrakumar said the decision was taken for two reasons. “One, we felt in the current political context, it is not possible to continue with a separate party. Second, we wanted to put to rest rumours started by the DMDK leadership that we were seeking to go back and join Mr. Vijayakant,” he said.
Mr. Chandhirakumar said he had sought an appointment with DMK president M. Karunanidhi and might meet him on Tuesday.
The Makkal DMDK was a splinter group formed by former DMDK legislators Mr. Chandhrakumar, S.R. Parthiban and C.H. Sekar after Mr. Vijayakant ruled out an alliance with the DMK for the Assembly polls. The three leaders accused Mr. Vijayakant’s wife Premalatha of misguiding the party and of a lack of democracy in the outfit. All three were given tickets to contest the polls by the DMK. Despite entering the fray under the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol, all three lost.
