A master plan for Vandalur zoo has been created, focusing on development for the next decade.
According to forest department authorities, the first section of the plan has details about the physiological and geological features of the zoo, as well as the infrastructure available.
The second part of the plan focuses on how the zoo should progress over the next several years with regard to the collection of animals as well as development.
The plan will be revised periodically in a scientific manner for those managing the zoo.
The various development projects carried out every year have been mentioned in the calendar of the master plan. Any officer who becomes the zoo director therefore, can follow this calendar and execute the projects accordingly.
The master plan also includes taking up research projects along with conservation breeding programmes. The breeding includes those of 11 new species. The construction of new enclosures as per the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZAI) will also form part of the master plan.
Apart from this, improving rainwater harvesting structures and the drainage system inside the zoo has been given paramount importance in the plan.
Vandalur zoo is one of the few zoos in the country that has prepared a master plan which has been approved of by the CZAI. Zoo authorities underwent an exercise conducted by the CZAI before preparing the plan, which took nearly two and half years to prepare, they said.
