Martyred officer’s body brought to Chennai

The mortal remains of Major Mukund Varadharajan, who was killed during an encounter with militants in Shopian in South Kashmir on Friday, were brought to Chennai late on Sunday. The 32-year-old officer was a resident of Professors Colony in East Tambaram.

The officer’s body arrived in an Air India aircraft from New Delhi at 11.10 p.m. His wife Indhu and a few relatives were present at the airport to receive his body. A number of senior officers were also present at the cargo complex, where they paid homage to the young officer.

The officer’s remains were taken to the Military hospital at St. Thomas Mount and will be taken to his house at Professors Colony, East Tambaram on Monday morning. The cremation will take place at Besant Nagar crematorium aaround 1 p.m.

Solatium

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a solatium of Rs. 10 lakh to the family of Major Mukund. In a statement, she also expressed her condolences to the family members of the officer.

Senior army officials met the family on Sunday to express their condolences and oversee the funeral arrangements.

Animal Husbandry Minister and Tambaram MLA, T.K.M. Chinnaiah described Mukund Varadharajan “as a brave son, who fought for the country and laid down his life in eliminating terrorism.”
