The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology is coming up with two initiatives that aim to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry. The emphasis would be on research focussed on ‘Green Chemistry' such as innovative use of eco-friendly products .

The Council is in the process of identifying one Arts and Science College in every district, which will carry out novel ways to create awareness on the achievements of Chemistry. The selected college will get a minimum fund of Rs.1 lakh from the Department of Science and Technologyto carry forward the programme in the district for one year. This would start from the coming academic year.

For research faculty working on developing a green technology using green chemistry, TNSCST will fund the project. But, the project has to be something that would benefit the state.

According to S. Vincent, Member-Secretary, TNSCST, a college with adequate lab facilities, good record of research taking place, nature of extensive service it renders in the field and how convincingly they wish to carry out the programme will be some of the main parameters that would be taken into account on which colleges get to take forward the project in the district. The chosen college would be responsible in creating awareness on the subject and its application in everyday life.
