Many schools in the State are yet to send their nominations of students for the INSPIRE award instituted by the Government of India this year.
Speaking to press persons here on Thursday, Executive Director of Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre P. Iyamperumal said that a total of 9,980 schools have sent the names of students who are eligible for the award.
Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre will continue to accept the nominations till January 15 and send them to the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. “All schools in the State are eligible for sending nominations. There is lack of awareness on the INSPIRE programme among teachers. We are trying to create awareness,” said Mr. Iyamperumal. Over 22,000 schools are there in the State, he added.
A two-day science exhibition to select the best students under the last year's INSPIRE Programme 2009-2010 will begin at Vel Tech University, Avadi on Saturday. Over 450 students from various districts will be participating. Over 20 students would be selected for the national-level contest to be organised in New Delhi.
A total of 10,256 students in the State have received scholarship of Rs.5,000 for the year 2009-2010. The Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre had collected nominations for selection of the students. The selected students of the INSPIRE programme would have the opportunity to become scientists at the CSIR laboratories after completion of their higher education.
