A manager of a finance firm in Poonamallee was arrested for stealing 6.5 kilogram of gold jewellery on Sunday evening.

According to police, Shankar (32) of Sekkadu in Avadi had joined India Infoline Finance Limited’s Poonamallee branch a few months back.

On Sunday night at around 8.30 p.m., he called the police control room stating that a masked person had broken into his office and taken the valuables. He also said that he was shut in a bathroom

A police team reached the spot and found the CCTV cameras had been turned towards the ceiling and other security gadgets had been switched off. The police suspected foul play as Shankar was giving contradictory statements. According to police, he reached the office at 5.30 p.m. and wearing a mask, turned the CCTV cameras towards the ceiling. He then deactivated the burglar alarm and CCTV network. He opened the locker, took the valuables in a bag and hid it in a burial ground in Avadi.

“After this he returned again at 7 p.m. and switched on the burglar alarm. When it went off, he cut the wire. When the alarm goes off, an alert is received. Shankar’s superiors informed him about it,” said Mr. Murugesan.

“He then hid inside the bathroom and called the police,” said Mr. Murugesan. “The alarm went on at 7 p.m. and he was informed by his superiors at that time. But he contacted the police at 8.30 p.m.,” said Mr. Murugesan.

The jewellery worth Rs. 1.15 crore has been recovered and Shankar has been remanded to custody.
