A 23-year-old man stabbed his 22-year-old girlfriend with a knife at the Anna Nagar Tower Park on Tuesday afternoon. Later, he stabbed himself with the same weapon. The two are undergoing treatment for multiple injuries at different hospitals in Anna Nagar.

According to the police, Latha (name changed on request), is a resident of Cholavaram. Her father Subramani is an electrician and a daily-wage earner. She is pursuing a degree course in mathematics at a private college in Anna Nagar.

School friends

She was in a relationship with Rajesh, a resident of Cholavaram, who is working in Coimbatore after completing his B.E in electric engineering from a private college here. The police claimed that the two studied in the same school in Chennai and were in a relationship since Class 9.

However, Latha recently made it clear she was not keen on continuing the relationship and had discussed the matter with Rajesh.

“On Tuesday, Rajesh, who had come to Chennai, asked her to come to the park around 2 p.m. Latha took her friend along,” said a senior police officer.

Rajesh and Latha were speaking to each other at the park and her friend stood a few metres away, the police said.

Soon, an argument broke out between the couple. Rajesh pulled out a knife and stabbed Latha. He also stabbed himself with the same knife.

“Hearing their cries, those in the park rushed to the spot and alerted a tea shop owner outside the park, who in turn alerted the police. Two constables took the two to the hospital,” said Murali, an autorickshaw driver near the park.

Doctors at a private hospital in Anna Nagar, where Latha has been admitted, said that she would undergo an operation for her injuries.

“Her parents don’t want her identity to be revealed,” said a doctor.

The Anna Nagar police have registered a case and are investigating.
