Man sentenced to life in prison

A 26-year-old man from Nandanam, was sentenced to life imprisonment for burning his wife alive while she was sleeping.

Anup was charged by Saidapet police for the offence under Section302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code in 2010.

According to the prosecution, the deceased Kalpana, had had two children from her earlier marriage with Nagaraj, her first husband, and then underwent a family planning surgery.

Later, she separated from Nagaraj and not disclosing that she had had a surgery, she married Anup.

After three years of marriage, she told Anup that she could not have children. Believing that she would be an obstacle to his marrying another woman,

Anup poured kerosene on her while she was sleeping on her bed and set her ablaze. She succumbed to injuries at a government hospital on June 20, 2010.

After the trial was completed, Mahila Court Judge Meena Satheesh sentenced Anup to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on him.
