A 27-year-old man died on the spot when an electric train hit him while he was crossing the railway track at Irumbuliyur, Tambaram, early on Wednesday morning.

Hailing from Tirunelveli district, Prabhakaran was employed as a technician at a car plant near Tambaram. He was living in a rented house in Irumbuliyur. He used to cross the railway track everyday to reach Grand Southern Trunk Road, where he would board his company bus.

At 5.45 a.m. on Wednesday, he was crossing the railway track and had not noticed the approaching railway train, a suburban electric local between Tambaram and Chengalpattu. He died instantly after he was hit by the train. The stretch between Tambaram and Perungalathur railway stations, especially in Irumbuliyur is among the most accident prone spots.

Innumerable pedestrians have been killed in such accidents. The railway compound wall has been breached at a number of spots by residents to walk across the railway track.
