A domestic squabble ended in an irate man allegedly murdering his wife in Tirumangalam, early on Monday.
According to the police, Kannan (41) and Mohanambal (37), both natives of Salem, had been married for 14 years. While Kannan is the head of department of an MBA course in RMK Engineering College, Mohanambal was a housewife. They have a 13-year-old daughter.
Kannan told the police that Mohanambal, who hailed from a well-to-do family, constantly taunted him and spoke ill of his family which came from humbler means.
“But neighbours claim they never heard anybody raise their voice in the house,” said J. Shivakumar, Tirumangalam inspector.
On Sunday, the couple shopped in T. Nagar and then went to Marina beach. They returned home later in the evening and went to bed after supper. “In the early hours of Monday, an argument broke out between the husband and wife, and Mohanambal began abusing her husband again,” said inspector Shivakumar.
Around 2 a.m., the argument heated up and Mohanambal allegedly shoved Kannan. He, in turn, slapped her and she retaliated by scratching his cheeks.
“In a fit of rage, he picked up a boulder and dropped it on Mohanambal’s head. She fell under the impact. He then slit her throat. Mohanambal died on the spot,” the inspector said. Following this, Kannan called up his friend Rajagopal and told him about the incident. He requested Rajagopal to come over and pick his daughter up as he did not want her to know of her mother’s death.
“Rajagopal sent another friend, Arun Kumar, to Kannan’s house. He accompanied Kannan to Tirumangalam police station where the latter surrendered. Kannan has been remanded in custody.
