The murder of a 40-year-old road contractor in Pullarampakkam village, Tiruvallur, on Thursday evening, created a stir among the villagers.
An angry mob ransacked Tiruvallur Government General Hospital and attacked mediapersons who were present there. Police personnel who tried to control the mob were also attacked.
According to the police, contractor M. Kamalakannan, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Street, MGR Nagar, in Pullarampakkam, got into an argument and fight with some rivals at a death anniversary function held in the village on Wednesday.
A few of them including Kamalakannan were injured in the incident. He was admitted to Tiruvallur GH and referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai. Ignoring doctor’s advice, the contractor went home on Thursday morning.
Around 6 p.m. on Thursday, Kamalakannan was working in his farm when a gang attacked him with knives and sickles. He was injured and rushed to Tiruvallur GH but doctors pronounced him ‘brought dead.’
The news of his death spread in the village and an enraged group of over 30 men reached the hospital and assaulted some medical staff and damaged furniture. Police personnel, including an inspector, were attacked and a few mediapersons who tried to film the proceedings were also manhandled. Their cameras were damaged.
The mob then returned to Pullarampakkam and assaulted two policemen stationed to maintain peace in the village. Three special teams have been formed to investigate the murder.
