A 41-year-old man died when the motorcycle he was riding was hit from behind by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus at Gowrivakkam near Tambaram on Sunday.

Traffic police said N.Velu was a resident of Jalladanpettai near Pallikaranai and was working in a private company in Kolapakkam.

After work, he was returning home on a motorcycle when the accident took place. In the collision, Velu was thrown off the motorcycle and came under the wheels of the bus.

The stretch of Velachery Main Road between Camp Road junction and Pallikaranai is accident-prone due to encroachments, overspeeding and wrongside driving. While the installation of traffic signals and road widening over the past few months have improved the situation, some spots including Selaiyur, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Gowrivakkam and Medavakkam among others continue to cause concern among the residents.
