An 86-year-old man committed suicide by jumping into the Adyar river from the Thiru-vi-ka bridge on Wednesday morning. The police said he was dejected over his deteriorating health. M. Thirunavu-kkarasu, a resident of Murugappa Street in Triplicane, had retired from the engineering division of the Indian Army.

After his wife’s death four years ago, he was shuttling between the residences of his four children. Around 10.30 a.m., his son’s driver was taking him to Adyar for a medical appointment. Enroute, he asked the driver to stop near the bridge. He stepped out of the vehicle and jumped off the bridge. Firemen along with the police recovered the body.
