A four-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a driver-cum-cleaner insider her school van en route to her home on Thursday afternoon.
On Saturday, police arrested the man following a complaint from the child’s parents.
According to police, Sarath Kumar (23), a resident of Seliyamman Koil Street in Thiruverkadu, had been working at a school in the locality for the past three years. He was a standby driver and cleaner of the van that was used to transport LKG students.
On Thursday afternoon, Kumar was with the children in the van, while another driver was at the wheel. He allegedly sexually assaulted one of the students on the back seat. When the child got home, she told her parents. Her mother took her to a doctor on Friday morning.
On Saturday, the parents went to the police, and a team then apprehended Kumar, based on their complaint. He has been sent to Puzhal prison, police said.
