Man held for selling banned tobacco products in Tiruvottiyur

Over 5 kg of contraband seized

The Tiruvottiyur Police nabbed a 45-year-old man engaged in manufacturing and selling banned tobacco products on Monday.

A senior official of the Chennai city police said A. Desappan, who was a resident of Nalla Thaneer Odai Kuppam in Tiruvottiyur, was running a full-fledged manufacturing facility for banned tobacco products such as gutkha and mava in his shop.

He was also engaged in distributing to petty shops in various parts of the city.

Based on a tip off, a special police team from Tiruvottiyur Police raided his house and found a huge haul of banned tobacco products kept in packets.

The police official said more than five kg of the banned tobacco was seized from the site.

Desappan has been arrested under the Smoking Spitting Act 2002.

He was later produced to a judicial magistrate and sent to prison.
