Pallikaranai police have launched a search for a 19-year-old youth on charges of kidnapping a girl.

The girl, from Villupuram district, had joined a dental studies course in Pallikaranai this year and was staying at the hostel. Her parents, unable to contact her, filed a police complaint on December 3.

Investigations revealed that she was last seen on the evening of December 2. Police said they then found out that the girl had become friends with 19-year-old Thyagarajan, on Facebook a few weeks ago. Thyagarajan had told her he was working at a software company.

A probe revealed that Thyagarajan, a resident of Otteri, was a school dropout and was an autorickshaw driver. On Monday, a case of kidnap was registered.
