A bag lifter who was caught by the police at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus on Sunday tried an unusual method to escape, but in vain. He bit off a finger of the constable who nabbed him.

According to the police, a 17-year-old resident of Kolathur had returned to the city after a trip to Kancheepuram.

On reaching the terminus, he was booking a cab using the mobile. He kept the bag on the ground and a man grabbed it and fled.

He raised an alarm and police constable Karthik, who was on special duty in plainclothes, along with a few autorickshaw drivers, chased and nabbed him. The public thrashed the suspect, later identified as Iyyapan of Pallavaram.

Karthik intervened to take him to the police station. “Iyappan suddenly turned around and bit off the constable’s right ring finger and tried to escape,” said a police officer. Passers-by nabbed Iyyapan and handed him over to the police.
