Man arrested, stolen jewellery recovered

St. Thomas Mount police on Monday arrested a 34-year-old man on charges of assaulting and robbing a woman employee at a ration shop in the Mount area on November 23.

Police said the suspect Anwar, a resident of Shaji Street in Alandur, had targeted the woman, Komathi (40) around 3.30 p.m., when she had been alone in the shop on Vempuliamman Koil Street.

“Anwar assaulted Komathi and robbed the six sovereigns of gold jewellery she was wearing and fled. She was injured and admitted to a hospital and recovered soon after,” said an officer.

A special team identified and tracked down Anwar around 6 a.m. on Monday on MKN Road, VOC Nagar in Alandur. Police said he had also been involved in a few others case of chain snatching and robbery and nearly 10 sovereigns of stolen gold jewellery were recovered.

Anwar was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
