A two-day-old infant was rescued from near a river in Surakkaipettai in Tiruvallur district by the social defence department on Tuesday.

Sources said a woman had heard the cries of the child and informed the local village administrative officer, who alerted the health department. The male baby was taken to a PHC in Surakkaipettai and later to the Tiruvallur Child Welfare Committee. He was then brought to an NGO in Chennai.

Sources at the department said the woman who found the child had created a ruckus at the PHC, saying she wanted to adopt the child as she did not have children.

A large crowd of over 400 residents gathered at the hospital. However, officials managed to take the baby to Chennai.
