The public toilet at the old concourse and near the main exit of Chennai Central station has been made disabled-friendly. The toilet has some women-friendly features too.
There are two dedicated toilets for the disabled — one each in the men’s and women’s complex and ramps have also been provided.
In an initiative reported to have been taken up for the first time by the railway administration, a sanitary napkin incinerator has been provided inside the women’s toilet.
A coin-operated sanitary napkin vending machine too has been installed outside the toilet.
Southern Railway sources said they had installed air curtains and made provisions for massive ducts to pump out the stale air.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited has invested about Rs. 40 lakh in sprucing up the toilet, as part of its corporate social responsibility outreach programme, officials said. However, using the facility will be free of cost only for the disabled, they said.
Earlier, there were provisions for passengers to take a shower, but not after renovation.
Railway assengers now have to go to the first floor, but this might be difficult for senior citizens as there are no elevators right now.
