Makeover for bus shelters in the offing

September 21, 2014 03:49 am | Updated 03:49 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Corporation has proposed to redesign bus shelters to enforce a queue system in bus stops in the city.

It has also planned to commission 130 well-designed bus bays on five bus routes that witnessed the largest number of accidents.

While a survey of all roads has been done to identify pieces of land for the bus bays, the civic body plans to give the bus transit infrastructure a makeover. “Roads covering major bus routes such as 6D, 29C and 21H have registered a large number of bus accidents. The existing infrastructure has to be remodelled to prevent accidents,” said an official of the Corporation.

At a meeting to improve bus transit facility on Friday, experts also stressed the need for more buses.

The police demanded more buses with doors to reduce accidents involving commuters.
