Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Most Rev. George Antonysamy the new archbishop of Madras-Mylapore archdiocese.
Dr. Antonysamy is now Apostolic Nuncio (Pope’s Ambassador) to Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
His appointment was announced by the Pope in Vatican City on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by Rev. Charles Kumar, chancellor of the archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore.
A native of Tiruchi, the archbishop-elect had his early education there and was a product of St. Joseph’s College. Later, he joined Urban University, Rome, to pursue Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Ph.) and Master of Theology (M.Th.). He holds a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology from Lateran University.
Dr. Antonysamy was ordained priest in Tiruchi in 1980. In 2002, Pope John Paul II made him Charge d’Affaires of the Vatican embassy in Jordan. For the last seven years, he had been serving in Africa.
