Plastic goods and furniture were destroyed in a fire, lasting over three hours, at a godown on Ranganathan Street in T. Nagar, early on Friday.

No one was hurt. Eight workers managed to escape soon after the fire broke out in the godown, belonging to a leading garment store.

Officials of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services said they received a call at 3.35 a.m. The fire was so intense that 17 fire tenders had to be sent to the spot to put out the flames.

More than 35 firemen battled the blaze till 6.30 a.m. Five water tankers too were pressed into service.

It took the firemen an additional 30 minutes to ‘cool down’ the premises after the fire was put out.

The godown did not have any fire-fighting equipment. An electrical short circuit is reported to have caused the accident. The Mambalam police are investigating.
