In terms of voter turnout, constituencies in the central parts of the city finished with disappointing figures.
Polling started at 7 a.m. at all the booths; and in the central parts of the district, a 12 per cent turnout was recorded in two hours.
In the next two hours, polling was sluggish in these parts, due to rains.
Brisk voting in the next two hours took the figure to more than 37 per cent.
Constituencies in the central parts of the district, including Thousand Lights (59.9 per cent) and Villivakkam (58), recorded a relatively low turnout when compared to those in the southern and northern parts of the city.
Many residents, who carried Aadhaar cards as proof of identity, were not permitted to vote. Senior citizen V. Padma, resident of Kasim Ali, First Street, Triplicane, said she had to return home to collect another proof of identity. “I carried my Aadhaar card. They refused to accept it,” said Ms. Padma.
Chennai District Election Office commissioned model polling booths in 38 polling station locations. But coolers, chairs and carpets were removed even before the polls were over at Arunachalam Street, Chintadripet.
